Role
Creative Director
Microsoft Research hired me as Creative Director to redesign the WorldWide Telescope (WWT), a sophisticated virtual reality experience that combines imagery from ground and space telescopes. My primary objective was to create a guided exploration of the universe that provided real-time educational information while making this complex technology accessible through web browsers.
My role encompassed UX strategy, design, and overall creative direction, with the challenge of simplifying the user experience to allow for broad accessibility. Additionally, I was tasked with establishing a new visual language and holistic framework for the WWT brand. This responsibility included defining the brand identity, building a design system, and overseeing the look and feel of the entire experience.
I developed an efficient, robust, and responsive system that resulted in a modern interface showcasing stunning astronomical imagery and encouraging interaction across multiple viewports. This project demonstrates how advanced scientific tools can be made accessible to a wider audience through thoughtful user experience design, setting a new standard for educational VR platforms in astronomy.
Beyond the digital realm, my creative direction extended to the environmental design for the launch events. This included designing installation panels, posters, and overseeing photography. Notable figures such as Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and astronaut Chris Hadfield experienced the installation at the launch event. I also directed the creation of peripheral items for distribution, ensuring a cohesive brand presence across all touchpoints.
